Logistics for K-12 Programs
School Programs: start at 9 AM and at 10:30 AM
Length: 1-2.5 hours
Number of students: 12 to 50
Transportation: We have on-site parking for one bus at the end of our narrow, unpaved road. Cars may be asked to park on the street. We request that buses and cars be off the property by 12:30 in order to accommodate other programs.
Terrain: The restrooms, classroom, pergola, store, and much of the demonstration gardens are wheelchair accessible. The balance of the grounds include gravel covered slopes and some steep climbs.
Weather: We hold programs rain or shine so please have students prepared with hats, sunscreen, raingear, and durable, close-toed shoes.
Lunch: You are welcome to stay for lunch at the picnic tables under the pergola. We do not have refrigerated storage for lunches. School groups must be off the property by 12:30 to accommodate other programs. At TPF, we practice “leave no trace” principles: Pack it in, pack it out. Minimize human impact, and protect wildlife by leaving no food or trash behind.

Professional Development
Our teacher professional development programs serve a wide range of educators by helping them implement innovative, environmentally-based, socially-conscious curriculum in their classrooms. We offer programs in all subject-matter areas using environmental topics as a lens to build skills, improve instructional practices, and lead to increased achievement for all students.
Our goal is to help teachers use environmental subjects and to engage students in critical thinking, problem solving, and collaboration skills. Exploring sustainability issues and solutions empowers students to be leaders for change.
Practical workshops, training, and institutes build content knowledge while providing opportunities for teachers to learn from their peers, as well as from professionals in environmental education, history, geography, horticulture, art, and cultural history. Workshops support The California Education Environment Initiative, New Generation Science Standards, and environment-based curriculum in history-social science and literacy. In addition, we provided methods and tool for schools transitioning to STEM and STEAM campuses.
Specific workshop topics included:
- Investigation and reading the local environment
- Field education in native plant propagation
- Urban ecology, cities as systems
- Developing curricula for your school native garden
We offer school in-service workshops and fieldtrips
Please check our calendar for this year’s programs. Fees and stipends vary. Our programs are LAUSD approved and may count toward salary points and credit.
